Chapter Sixteen

Ali mulled over Grace’s comments all evening. One thing stuck out. What could have ‘ruined J.J.’s career’? Adult films? Drugs, maybe?

Ali called Ryan. ”Hey, I know I’m over my limit on favors, but . . .”

“Go on,” Ryan said.

“Do you think I might be able to get a copy of the tox screen? Or maybe, possibly get in to see the medical examiner?”

“That’s not usually something we hand out. I can check to see if you can meet with Dr. Sakamoto, though. Hang tight.” He put her on hold for a moment and came back on the line with a time and an address. “I don’t know who you bribed over here, but Commissioner Jennings says to give you whatever you want.”

“Thank you, Detective McGuire. You’re the best.” She could get used to having a friend on the police force.

* * *

Dr. Sakamoto had worked on several high profile murder cases over the years and Jessica Jackson was just another case to him. Ali was pleasantly surprised by his willingness to see her on such short notice.

Once admitted to his office, she took a seat in one of the chairs across from the desk and waited. A large oval table took up one half of the room and a projector glowed and pulsed overhead.

"Hello, Miss Loukas. How are you today?"

Ali stood as he entered the room.

“Please, have a seat,” he said. He was a small man of Asian descent with a warm smile and a firm handshake. "You don’t look like your voice." He said.

"Is that a good thing?" she asked.

"Very good. You sound so . . . " he paused for a moment as he searched for the right word. " . . . rigid on the air."

"That’s my job. I'm great at sounding stuffy."

"What can I do for you today, Miss Loukas?"

"I've been investigating Jessica Jackson's murder and I would like to find out if the toxicology reports showed anything unusual."

Dr. Sakamoto raised an eyebrow. "Some investigation," he said. "We already know that the cause of death was asphyxiation by strangulation. Why do you ask about toxicology?" he asked, as if he already knew the answer.

"I'm not quite sure, but it seems as though we're missing something," Ali said. “She was behaving differently just before she died and she was keeping secrets from loved ones. I thought maybe she had picked up a new habit.”

“Not one investigator has asked for this information.” He looked over at Ali as he opened the file in front of him. "I can tell you right off that there was no evidence of illegal drug use whatsoever."

Dang. I was sure there would be something in that file that would tell me why Jessica had been acting strangely.

"But," Dr. Sakamoto started. Ali sat up straight in her chair and leaned forward. The next few words dripped out of his mouth like honey. "There were particles of an experimental anti-depressant drug called Analith in the stomach of the victim. Her medical records did not indicate she was receiving treatment for depression.
